GAME 1 - HERITAGE 6 - TRACY 2
The Freshmen got their game in with Heritage even though it was thought the wet fields would prevail. By start time everything looked good and the game was played under nice conditions.
Heritage would jump out to a 2-0 lead and the Dogs could not put much pressure on the Patriots for a comeback. As the 2-0 game moved on, Heritage plated 2 more in the 3rd and 2 in the 7th. Tracy had their only rally of the day in the 6th on hits by Anthony Crivello and AJ Saenz, and then a 2 run double by Colby Dorn to decrease the deficit to 4-2 but that would be the end of the scoring for Tracy.
Logan Contreras started for the first three innings and Dorn completed the final 4 innings.

Coach Sal Alvarado's comments: "We had another close game that did not go our way. We had a lot of positives to choose from, but there are a few things we are still trying to fix. I told the team postgame that we should not have lost this game. Striking out 11 times is not going to get us many wins the rest of the way. We are a few days away from league and we need to figure it out quick. Hard work, dedication, and learning from these tough losses will continue to bring us progress in the remainder of this 2024 season."
"Antonio Zapien pitched well against what I thought was the best hitting team I've seen at the Freshman level. He held them to minimal runs. Our defense started off really good and we began making mistakes towards the end that gave up our lead. Sidon Lanning came into for relief and redeemed himself after a few previous challenging outings."
"Hitting has not been that great, but AJ Saenz hit the ball well today, I mean the hardest I've seen him hit it 2-4 with 1RBI). We had a few other miscellaneous hits. Gavin Sandoval did a good job getting on several balls today and Arjun Kalirai's bat is coming around. Anthony Crivello and Duncan Manne smoked a ball here and there throughout the game. My big bat today was Lincoln Perry (2-3 with 1RBI, 1 run scored). He has a great ability to put the bat on the ball and make things happen."

With Arjun Kalirai having pitched a good game and Tracy trailing only by a run heading into the final inning (6th due to time), the Tracy bullpen and the supporting defense let the game slip away with errors and walks as Livermore High pulled away to score 5 runs and never look back.
Tracy started the game with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Logan Contreras hit a RBI single to score AJ Saenz. Kalirai hit a ball that was misplayed by the 2nd baseman to score Crivello who had reached on a walk.
Kalirai cruised through the 2nd and 3rd but ran into a little trouble in the 4th as the Livermore bats began to wake up the 2nd time seeing him at the plate.
Now trailing 4-2, the Tracy offense could not get anything going until the bottom of the 5th as Crivello got a hit. Gavin Sandoval got hit by a pitched and Crivello stole 2nd and 3rd in the inning. Duncan Manne then put down a beautiful suicide squeeze up the first base line to score Crivello and shorten the deficit to 5-3. Arjun would connect on a Sac Fly to score Sandoval and make it 5-4.
With Kalirai's time on the mound done heading into the 6th, Gavin Sandoval and Alfonso Silveira attempted to keep it close, but a combination of walks, hit batters, errors, and some hard hits put Tracy in a grave condition trailing 9-4 in the bottom of the 6th.
With the time limit of the game approaching, Tracy was unable to score two runners they had put on base in the inning, and the game ended with a score of 9-4.
The Freshmen will try to redeem themselves at Livermore on Wednesday.

After losing to James Logan earlier in the year 8-3, it felt good to get a 3-2 win on Thursday at Tracy. Logan Contreras went the first 4 1/3 innings allowing only 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 4. Jordan Murrietta went 2/3 and Leland Freitas went the final 2 innings striking out 5.
Duncan Manne led the Dogs with 2 hits and Arjun Kalirai was 1-2 with a Sac Fly RBI. Nate Winn also collected a RBI.

After a win on Monday, the Freshmen traveled way up to Elk Grove and were dealt a quick knockout blow. "It was an upsetting loss for us," said Coach Alvarado. "We got there and checked out of it and it carried onto the field. With just four hits there was not much to celebrate or cheer for. I do look forward to wiping the slate clean and getting a rematch on Thursday with James Logan High," said Alvarado. "I only threw Logan Contreras 20 pitches today, so I will be using him again on Thursday."

Antonio Zapien cruised through the Pitman bats with the help of his defense until Pitman tied the game in the 6th. Tracy was able to get an unearned run in the bottom of the 6th and then Alfonso Silveira came in and closed the door on a final Pitman threat to give Tracy another victory.
AJ Saenz and Silveira were 2-4. Gavin Sandoval, Duncan Manne, Logan Contreras, Zapien, Arjun Kalirai, and Sidon Lanning each had hits. Saenz would collect 3 stolen bases with his always aggressive baserunning.

The Freshmen played sound defense to support the starting pitching of Logan Contreras and late inning relief of Alfonso Silveira. The Bulldogs would jump out to a 3-0 lead but the game drew tighter late as the Mustangs scored two and threatened to tie the game. Good infield play kept the door closed on any further threat by Oakdale.
"It was an exciting win for us today," said Coach Alvarado. "We played a really good team and came away with a nice win. Our defense played well and we got good pitching from Logan for 5 1/3 and then Alfonso to close it out. Logan challenged their hitters and got the strikeouts and double play balls."
Coach Alvarado also called out the growth of his young catcher. "Nate Winn is really maturing as a catcher. I see him as a leader and he is really gaining confidence and relaxing more."
"I also like the way Benito Beza worked his at bat when called upon today. While it ended in a strikeout, the kid worked the count fouling off pitches and battling with their pitcher. That was great to see."
"It's fun to watch the play of AJ Saenz. When he gets on base, he really causes chaos on the basepaths."
Coach Alvarado has seen a change in the team this year. "We have really progressed in our short journey this year. I felt like we really became stronger as a result of the Bear Creek game. We fight more and play cleaner baseball."
Coach concluded his comments complimenting the communication skills of his assistant coach. "Alfonso is great working and communicating with the players so they don't have to hear from me all the time. We have developed good coaching chemistry."

The Freshmen Dogs defeated the Tokay Tigers on Tuesday afternoon 7-0.
Coaches Comments: "We had a nice pitching performance from Antonio Zapien today. He provided 6 inning of shutout baseball and Alfonso Silveira came in to close it out in the 7th.," said Head Coach Sal Alvarado.
"We had a nice offensive showing today but the downside was our baserunning. We got picked off way too many times in this game."
"Logan is going to be on the bump for us tomorrow when we host Oakdale."

Down 5-1 after a rough start, the Bulldogs rallied quickly in the 3rd to post 6 runs and then another 2 in the 4th to have a comfortable 9-5 lead headed into the final inning of play. With 1 out, things began to unravel and after a few minutes the Dogs found themselves trailing by a run which they could not overcome in their final at bats.
Coaches Comments - I told my team postgame that games like these are really heartbreaking. There were a lot of compliments to go around throughout the game, but in that last defensive stand we needed to get those last 3 outs and they proved to be very difficult."
"I really liked the way we executed our bunting today to generate some havoc offensively."
"We are coming around as a team, despite two tough losses this week. We are now 1-3 but I'm optimistic we will rebound next week."

It was a crazy start for the Bulldogs in Atwater as they exited the bus without their helmets, play wrist bands, and the scorebook. The bus driver pulled away to go grab a meal leaving the Dogs to find helmets elsewhere. "We put on some funky colored helmets and laid it on Atwater early. We did not stop the rest of the game," said a smiling Coach Alvarado. "I made some adjustments in the lineup today and it seemed to work. I was impressed with how Logan Contreras shutdown the Falcons for 6 innings in his mound performance."

Postgame Comments From Coach Sal Alvarado
"It was a tough loss today, but there were a few positives. Lincoln Perry started in right field today and got two hits. Gavin Sandoval hit well as he collected two hits and a walk. Antonio Zapien started on the mound for us and although the first inning was a bit shaky, he then really settled down as the game progressed. Bella Vista had a decent squad and swung the bat well. Antonio battled his tail off and had them guessing at the plate."
"We are still very green as a team. Coach Alfonso and I are still mixing some players around to see what best fits their way of play. Today we incorporated most of our guys in one way or another on the field."
"I praise my assistant coach for always having my back and being my second set of eyes."
February 23, 2024
The THS Freshman game today ended up being a 5 inning scrimmage even though both sides were suited up and playing it like a regular game. This came as a surprise to the coach and a few others, but the play on the field provided our Freshmen with plenty to be optimistic about although there were plenty of errors that need to be cleaned up before the next game. The Dogs played even with the Jaguars and took the lead at times. Walks and errors hurt the Bulldogs in this early season action.
"There was some miscommunication, so when the game was abruptly called and labeled a scrimmage, I was shocked," said Coach Sal Alvarado. "Scrimmage or game, I'm very pleased we had the opportunity to play the Kimball JV team today and we did good considering we have not gotten the practice time we wanted due to the rain. Some of our fundamentals were off leading to a lot of errors because of the lack of practice."
"We got a lot of our players on base today. Players getting their first High School hits were Alfonso Silveira Jr, Logan Contreras (2 hits) and Anthony Crivello (a double). AJ Saenz walked 3 times, Arjun Kalirai got hit twice and walked to get on base three times. Gavin Sandoval got hit twice as well."
Coach called out one of his players for a great execution at the plate. "Sidon Lanning came up in the 3rd and laid down a nice Sac Bunt to advance the runners. He put us in a position to score runs."
It was family day on the mound today as Coach Alvarado gave two cousins the pitching duties. "I started Logan Contreras who went 51 pitches in 3 innings and gave up a handful of walks. He was relieved by his cousin Antonio Zapien for two innings and 38 pitches.
"We have a young but very eager team this year. My goal is to prepare them for the JV and Varsity level. I have high expectations of them," said Coach Alvarado.
In closing, Alvarado praised his new assistant coach this year Alfonso Silveira. "He compliments my style really well and he is a good communicator with players. We are developing good chemistry already this year."
The Dogs suit up on Monday at home in what will be a real game!
