Freshman Coach Comments from Fridays loss:
It’s another tough loss to complete the sweep. It’s never fun to get swept, especially from a rival. We had the lead for an inning, but St. Mary’s is resilient and confident and took it right back. We didn’t have many opportunities offensively after that one 3 run inning for us. Arjun pitched his tail off. Leaving the St. Mary’s coach and the umpire praising him during our end of the game hand shakes. He had great command and got us two key strike outs when we needed them. He also had a big pick off at first that helped us build a little bit of confidence.

Coaches Comments: We had a tough loss on Wednesday. We were down 4-0 in the 1st inning and it is hard to bounce back against a good team. We didn't swing it well and didn't take advantage of big opportunity for a couple of runs. We need to manufacture runs and not be hopeful and that seemed to be our biggest issue today. After a rough 1st inning Alfonso Silveira fought hard and held them to minimal damage and then Antonio Zaipien kept throwing strikes, but it was way out of our hands by then as St. Mary's took over.
I look forward to our next game as we get to the wipe the slate clear and restart. Going to face a good pitching again and hope the bats come around.
2 runs in the 2 games and 5 hits in those two aren't going to get the job done. Thank goodness we get to play anew.

St. Mary's 5 - Tracy 1
Coaches Comments: "We played a good team today who had good pitching, but we put the ball in play and had our chances. Unfortunately I thought the theme for our team today was opportunities that were not fulfilled. We gave them some runs and we failed to get some runs due to some mental mistakes on defense and on the bases. I know we can play better and get a win against the Rams, we just have to show it on Wednesday at home.
Coach Alvarado praised the pitching up Logan Contreras and Anotonio Zapien on the mound. He also highlighted a hard hit double by Alfonso Silveira, and a single by Anthony Crivello. "We only struck out 4 times against good pitching."
Arjun Kalirai limited Tokay to 4 runs over 5 innings as he let his offense quickly build up a nice cushion for him scoring 4 in the 1st, 4 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd and then 6 more runs in the 4th inning to make quick work of Tokay. Kalirai would go 2-3 with 2RBIs and 3 runs scored to help himself.

Coaches Comments:
"We had a big win today," said a proud Coach Alvarado. "We ran the bases well and that put us in great opportunities to score a lot of runs. I've moved Logan Contreras to the lead off spot and it has paid dividends for our offense."
"Antonio Zapien pitched really well today for us throwing a complete game. Our defense made a few mistakes (4 errors), but nothing thankfully that affected our outcome. In our postgame discussion I explained to the players when we score big we are more forgiving of the little mistakes. We're in the belly of the beast (middle of season) and I can see some fatigue, but I'm excited to see us really starting to come together. This is the lineup and hitting approach we've been hoping for since Game one of the season. I'm just happy it's coming all together in league!"
Logan Contreras had a big offensive day going 3-3 with a RBI and a double. Arjun Kalirai and Anthony Crivello each had 2 RBIs and multiple Bulldogs worked 1 or more walks.

Monday 4-8-24
Coach Alvarado felt relaxed on Monday evening following an 8-5 Freshman win at home. "It felt good to get back in the win column but it did not come easy at first," he said. "It was a bit scary at the start as Tokay opened up a 3-0 lead in the 3rd, but the guys did a great job staying in the game and having a big 8 run bottom of the inning. I challenged the team to overcome the adversity. We still have some fine tuning to tweak, but they played a lot better game today than some of our recent outings."
Coach complimented his pitchers. "Logan did well to start us off and Sidon came in and got his outs. Fons came in and shut the door at the end."
"Our hitting was good today, but would love that one extra key hit if we could get it, but we got the job done. Ultimately I'm pleased with the team to conquer the 3 run deficit and achieve the win today."

4-1-24
Tracy took an early 2-0 lead but saw their lead fade in the 3rd. AJ Saenz was 2-3 and Logan Contreras doubled with an RBI in the loss.
"It was another tough loss for us," said 2nd year Freshman Coach Sal Alvarado. "We had great pitching from Arjun Kalirai (4 innings) and Sidon Lanning (1 2/3rds) and we held them to to just 7 hits and no earned runs. Our defense though made a couple of errors on back-to-back plays and that cost us our lead in the 3rd. It seems like this season our games have flipped on one bad inning. When we have little margin for error those bad innings are very costly to us and make it hard to come back from."
"I would have liked to see more from our offense but I was pleased that our strikeouts were fewer today. We hit the ball hard today but unfortunately it was right to their defense."

Shortly after the Freshman game got started the Bulldogs found themselves down 5-0 in the first inning having shown some sloppy play on the field. As the Dogs entered the dugout to grab their bats, there was a quiet depressed tone in the dugout. Fortunately it did not last long as the bats came to life putting one run up in the first and then four in the 2nd to bring the score to 6-5. In the 4th Tracy would add another run to tie the game and then defense on both sides settled in to play even through the 7th inning.
"The story of our games this season is "Just One Bad Inning" and we had that right at the start," said Coach Sal Alvarado. "Sidon Lanning threw well on Monday and we had a gameplan to use him for a couple of innings today, but Lincoln had his number on Wednesday. We quickly went to Antonio Zapien and he held them to just one run from the 2nd inning through the 5th. It allowed us to catch up. Alfonso Silveira came in and shut the door as he most often does."
"The bats were more active today than normal which was really good to see. Logan Contreras had a heck of a game at the plate going 2-4 with two doubles, 3RBIs, and 2 runs scored. AJ Saenz also had a good day starting off the game with a triple and ending 2-3 on the day. Gavin Sandoval and Duncan Manne also had two hits for us." We scattered our 10 hits around today."
In the bottom of the 7th the Bulldogs had a chance to win it. After two quick outs, Manne and Anthony Crivello singled. Both would ultimately advance one base putting the winning run at 3rd. Nate Winn would strikeout to end the game, but Coach Alvarado had high praise for his at bat. "He battled in there for us and very much had a quality at bat. In that at bat he fouled off four pitches as he went toe-to-toe with a very good Lincoln reliever."
Coach also had some other compliments to pass out. "It was nice to have Alfonso back in the lineup from his injury. I was also inspired to see Duncan Manne in the lineup after encountering a bad luck injury this past Saturday. He started both games for us this week and was eager to be on the field with us and contribute. He showed a lot of fight."
"After a five game losing streak I'm hoping this tie is moving us into a positive trajectory for a win," said Coach Alvarado.

Coaches comments: Another tough loss for our team! A lot of similar mistakes made through the game and same ones we make against high caliber teams.
We started off really hot. AJ led off with a one pitch single and got the ball rolling. we scored 2 in the first with one out, bases loaded and didn’t get much after that. I had some coaching errors today and second guesses I wish I had back. We turned a lot of double plays and most were 6 unassisted from Saenz. Gavin made a nice diving catch to keep us at a 2-0 lead around the 2nd or 3rd inning. It’s just difficult to keep good teams like that to a minimum. I’ve seen it happen many times, and good baseball teams will always, eventually open it up and unfortunately we didn’t have enough runs to stay in or around the lead. We scored a late two, but by then momentum was on their side. Lodi plays St. Mary’s tomorrow and us at home Friday so hopefully we can take advantage of that. As long as we continue to hit well throughout the game we have a great chance.
Saenz 2-3, 2 runs scored
Sandoval 2-4, 2RBIs
Crivello 1-4
Silveira 1-2, 1RBI
Anthony Crivello and Nate Winn were the only Bulldogs to get hits on Monday Antonio Zapien got the bulk of the innings on the hill throwing 6 innings of 5 hit ball.
Coaches comments:
Another tough loss today. Antonio pitched well and gave us an opportunity to win this game. Neither our offense or defense helped him out. We made a lot of errors that led to a couple runs. The Lodi pitcher threw a lot of strikes and we didn’t seem ready to go. Hopefully Wednesday we can play some bet baseball and get back on the win column.
Following a final league win vs Lincoln on Saturday, Coach Alvarado had his closing comments on the season:
"We ended the season with a 7-1 win today. Antonio pitched his tail off almost throwing a complete game. He only gave up 1 run and a couple of hits. He really kept them off balance and we helped him by executing on offense. We had a couple of bunts for hits as well as some situational small ball. Our defense played very well."
"Jordan Murrietta got a nice single to left today (his first). We also had some big hits from other guys like Alfonso's triple in the late innings"
"Our season is over and its not sinking in yet I wish we could have a year round season I wish nothing but the best for this group of boys. As long as they continue to play hard and remain confident, they have a bright future."

Friday - Freshmen Lose 13-12 to Lodi
It was another unfortunate loss for us . We got down big quick and had to claw our way back into from 10 runs down. I threw a handful of pitchers in there but it was Lincoln Perry getting his pitching debut to keep the damage to a minimum. We had an opportunity to win it in the last inning, but it didn't end our way. I'm just looking forward to the boys playing tough for their last game on Saturday.
